There was a time when Motorola was probably the most important mobile
phone manufacturer. Sure, there were bigger companies in the game, but Motorola made the cool phones. That was natural before the iPhone was a thing, but back then the hottest phone you could buy was the Motorola Razr (or "Razr" as designed by Motorola). It was a sleek and stylish flip phone that surpassed the design of perhaps the most popular flip phone of all time, the StarTac.
Well, on Tuesday Motorola announced that it is bringing back the Razr with roughly the same form factor, only this time it offers a pretty incredible foldable display. In fact, it could be the first foldable display that actually makes sense and is worth the cost. Of course, this is helped by the fact that at the time of the January sale, it will be at least $ 500 cheaper than Samsung's or Huawei's competing models.
I've been criticizing folding display technology in the past because no one figured out how to do it right. The Samsung Galaxy Fold had problems at startup, mainly due to the poor design of the screen, hinge and bezel. Samsung went back and made changes that really improved the phone, but I'm still not sure if it's worth $ 2,000.
In this regard, the Razr is brilliant. It's a brand that people are familiar with (at least those who remember the days of flip phones) and who still have affection. The Razr was a status symbol. It was eye-catching, expensive and should be seen at a time when most cell phones were in a purse or even worse in a clip on a belt.
